Lot 184 - 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 'Eleanor' Recreation

The Ford Mustang needs little introduction; the car that built America, that bought freedom to the younger generation and featured in many blockbuster films including, in this instance, a GT500 in 'Gone in 60 Seconds' starring Nicolas Cage. The car in question, 'Eleanor', represents Randall 'Memphis' Raines's nemesis and is something to be feared and adored in equal measure. The Shelby Mustang is a high performance variant of the Ford Mustang which was built by Shelby American from 1965 through to 1970. From 1967, the GT350 carried over the K-Code high performance 289ci with a 'COBRA' aluminium hi-rise intake manifold. The GT500 was then added to the line-up. These later cars carried over few of the performance modifications of the 1965/66 GT350s although they did feature more cosmetic changes. In September 1967, production was moved to the A.O. Smith Company of Ionia, Michigan under Ford control. Based on the 1967 Shelby GT500 fastback, the 'Eleanor' was a modernised variant with serious power and is considered by many to be the ultimate Mustang.

What can only be described as a fabulous example and finished to a very high standard, this GT500 recreation is based on a 1968 390GT Mustang. With this original S-Code 390 starting point, confirmed by its accompanying Marti Report, and a 6.4 litre big-block V8 engine producing a dyno tested 450+ bhp coupled to a TKO 600 five-speed gearbox, the rebuild had begun in a way that excited its previous owner and the mastermind behind this stunning recreation.

Having restored many American muscle cars in the past and originally earmarking the 390GT for a Bullet replica, he became increasingly frustrated by cheap body kitted examples of the Eleanor on poor donor car's fitted with very little care and attention referencing them as 'all show and no go'. His personal challenge was to build the ultimate recreation, offering a GT500 replica that sounded, looked, handled and impressed as it should. Amongst countless other upgrades, included is a Control Freak, fully adjustable, coil-over system to the front suspension with Heidts four-link with adjustable coil-overs to the rear; helping you stop are Willwood four piston callipers with drilled and slotted discs. On purchasing this car a couple of years ago, the vendor sent it directly to Steve Monk of Bodywerks in Uxbridge to be checked over and to have correct new seats and seatbelts installed; the steering column was also repositioned correctly. Since that time, the car has only been driven about 300 miles. This Mustang is supplied with a V5C registration document and a MoT test certificate valid until September 2017. Many tribute versions have been produced over the years to a greater or lesser effect, but this example must count amongst one of the finest. We strongly advise viewing both the car and the history file and believe this is amongst the best, if not, the best on the market today.  One of the most iconic cars in movie history offered in such spectacular form; this Mustang has the 'GO BABY GO!' effect.
